1. Small Things Like These책에서 기억에 남는 구절

2. 매그달렌 수녀원의 이야기

 

Small Things Like These소설은 아일랜드의 마을을 배경으로 전개되는 이야기이다. 크리스마스를 앞둔 시기에 석탄과 장작을 나르는 것이 업이며 5명의 딸을 둔 아빠안 주인공 빌펄롱(Bill Furlong)이 그가 거주하는 지역의 수녀원에서 발생하는 충격적인 사실을 발견하게 되면서 겪게되는 내적인 갈등을 묘사하는 소설이다.

이 작품은 실제로 역사적으로 존재했던 '매그달렌 수녀원'을 배경으로 쓰여졌으며 개인의 사회적 책임과 양심에 대한 문제를 일깨워주는 작품이다. 110페이지 정도의 짧은 소설로 작가 특유의 절제된 문체로서 쓰인것이 특징이다. 

 

3. 학습 자료로서의 Small Things Like These 소설, 영화의 활용

(1) 소설의 한 장면을 바탕으로 한 연극

먼저 교사가 소설의 내용을 다 읽고 난 후 등장인물의 수와 대사를 상상해 본다. 그 다음 학생들과 수업에서 장면을 묘사한 글을 읽고 해석해 보도록 하고, 이 글을 바탕으로 조별로 연극의 대본을 짜도록 한다. 조별로 구상한 연극을 연기해보도록 하여 발표를 진행하고, 끝으로 Small Things Like These소설을 바탕으로 개봉된 영화의 해당 장면을 함께 보면서 각 조별로 의미있게 표현한 부분들과 영화에서 표현된 점은 무엇이 다른지 생각해 보도록 한다. 활동 중에 실 생활에서 쓰이는 영어 표현을 익힐 수 있다.

 

(2) 등장인물이 겪는 양심적 갈등을 활용한 토론

소설과 영화에서 다루는 핵심적인 소재는 주인공이 마주한 도덕적 갈등이다. 수녀원에서 목격한 일들에 대해 불편한 마음을 갖는 주인공과 가족을 비록한 주인공을 둘러싼 사람들이 건네는, 주인공의 불편한 마음과는 상반되는, 조언들이다. 구체적인 찬반 토론의 주제로서는, 'Should Bill have spoken out against the injustice he witnessed in the convent?'와 같은 주제가 있다. 찬성과 반대의 입장을 정하고, 소설속 인물들의 대화나 행동을 활용해 그 입장을 뒷받침할 근거들을 정리하는 활동을 해봄으로써 논리적인 사고력을 기르도록 해 볼 수있다.

 

(3) 시대적 배경과 역사 탐구

이 영화는 실제 존재했던 수녀원의 실화를 바탕으로 한 것이기 때문에 역사적인 사실을 정확히 알아보고 도덕적 딜레마가 생길 만큼의 일이 발생한 이유에 대해 탐구해 보는 과제를 진행해 볼 수 있다. 매드달렌 수녀원의 역사에 대해 조사하거나, 또는 매그달렌 수녀원에서 일어났던 안좋은 사례들, 그리고 그 사례들이 왜 일어나게 되었으며 좋지 않은 일들이 폭로되고 난후 그 후에 어떤 사회적인 조치가 일어났는지 등에 대해서 조사해 볼 수 있다.

 

같은 소설을 읽고 난 후 학생들이 자신의 선호에 맞는 과제를 택하도록 하여 자율성을 부여하는 방식으로 학습활동에 동기화를 시킬 수도 있다.

Chapter 1.

(1) 문장

• Then, the clocks went back the hour and the long November winds came in and blew~bare.

- ‘시계가 한시간 뒤로 물러났다’ 라는 뜻인데, 서머타임 해제가 된 것을 의미한다 (daylight saving time ends) - 서머타임이 끝나고 본격적으로 늦가을의 거센 바람이 부는 계절이 되었다는 뜻!

 

(2) 어휘

• quay - n. 부두, 선창
• dole - n. 실업수당 / queue - n. (무엇을 기다리는 사람,자동차 등의) 줄
• bale - n. 더미, 뭉치 (ex. he also sold bales of briquettes)

Chapter 2. 

(1) 문장

• He had gone on then, to the technical school for a couple of years before winding up at the coal yard, doing much the same work as his own men now did, under him, and had worked his way up.
  - his own men - 이제는 석탄 관리자가 된 주인공이 일을 부리고 있는 아랫 사람들을 일컫는 말.
  - worked one’s way up - (노력하여) 승진하다, 높은 지위로 올라가다.
  
  
• Some said she had given him money because it was one of her own that had fathered him - sure hadn’t he been christened William, after the kings.
  - father는 아버지로서 양육하다의 뜻이므로 앞에 있는 she를 설명하는 술어가 아니다. one of her own이라는 것이 주체이며 ‘her own 그녀의가족중 - one 하나이다’ 라는 뜻이다. 즉, Mrs Wilson의 친척 중에 Furlong을 아들삼아 기른 남자가 있었다 라는 뜻이다.

  - have a (good) head on one’s shoulder: 실무의 재능(상식)이 있다.
  - ex. She’s also very well mannered and has a good head on her shoulders: 그녀는 아주 예의 바르고 똑똑해

(2) 어휘

• walking papers - n. 해고통지
  - Walking Paper: 해고 통지, 즉 더 이상 그 조직에 소속되지 않음을 알리는 문서입니다. 일반적으로 해고된 사람에게 주어지며, 이 문서는 그 사람이 조직에서 떠날 준비를 하도록 지시합니다.
  - Marching Order: 군대에서 쓰이는 용어로, 명령이나 지시를 내리는 것을 의미합니다. 조직에서 누군가가 퇴출되거나 새로운 일을 시작하도록 지시를 받는 경우에도 사용할 수 있습니다. 해고나 퇴직, 재배치 등의 상황에서 이 표현이 쓰일 수 있습니다.
• harness - v. (안전하게) 고정하다, 묶다. (ex. He was then harneessed into the big pram)
• pass judgements - v. 판단을 내리다
• living off - v. ~에 의존해 살다
• on account of ~으로, ~ 때문에 (ex. living off the pension she received on account of her husband having killed in the War.)
• father - v. 아이를 낳다, 아이의 생부가 되다.
• wheeling a borrow - 손수레를 밀고가다 (ex. his mother had died suddenly, kelled over on the cobblestones, oneday, wheeling a barrow of crab-apples up to the house, to make jelly.)
• gneuflect - v. 무릎을 꿇다
• crease - n. 주름 (ex. Eileen’s hand slowly pushed a crease out of the bedspread)
• stotious - a. 만취한 (아일랜드영어)
• come down on - v. ~을 호되게 다루다. (treat) (ex. the bank was coming down on them.)
• redundancy - n. 정리해고 (ex. the big fertiliser factory on the far side of the river, had made several redundancies)
• sell ice to the Eskimos / selling send in the desert- 무의미한 일을 시도하는 상황을 관용적으로 일컫는 말.
• keep one’s head down - v. 눈에 띄지 않게 조용히 지내다, 위험을 피하려고 활동을 자제하다. (ex. he decided to keep his head down and not get involved in the argument)

Chapter 3.

(1) 문장

• But it cut him to see one of his own so upset by the sight of what other children craved and he could not help but wonder if she'd be brave enough or able for what the world had in store.
  - 'cut him to see'의 cut은 마음 아프게 하다, 가슴을 찌르다. -> 그가 보기에 마음이 아팠다.
  - 해석: 하지만 다른 아이들이 그렇게 간절히 원하는 것을 보고 자기 아이가 그렇게 속상해하는 걸 보니 가슴이 아팠다. 그리고 그녀가 세상이 준비한 일들을 용기 내어 헤쳐 나갈 수 있을지, 감당할 수 있을지 걱정하지 않을 수 없었다.
  
  
• Might their lives be different or much the same - or would they just lose the run of themselves?
  - 'lose the run of yourself' is an informal expression that means to lose control of oneself or to behave in an unexpected way. It can also mean to get carried away(carry away:~의 넋을 잃게 하다.) or to think you are more important than others.
  
  
• When the mixture was ready, Eileen pushed it into the big square tin with the wooden spoon, smoothing it out on top before giving the base a few hard bangs to get it all into the corners, laughing a little- but no sooner was it in the oven with the door closed than she took stock of the room and told the girls to clear down so she could get on, and start the ironing.
